How Long Does a Proper Ceramic Coating Take? (And Why It Shouldn’t Be Done in a Day)
How LONG DOES A PROPER CERAMIC COATING TAKE?
(AND WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE DONE IN A DAY)
Hey everyone! Today we wanted to go over why a proper ceramic coating application takes the time that it does, and why it's worth the wait. We've put together a comprehensive guide outlining the whole process and purpose of each step, as well as the benefits of investing in a ceramic coating service that's done right, not quick.
Setting EXPECTATIONS
One of the most common misconceptions clients have about ceramic coatings is that they’re a fast, same-day service that can be done in no time at all. After all, applying a protective coating seems simple enough, right?
In reality, a proper ceramic coating application - especially using premium, high-end products like Modesta - requires methodical, skilled craftsmanship that involves heavy prepwork and expert handling. The coating itself is only one part of the process; the bulk of the work happens in the preparation, correction, and curing stages that ensure long-term performance.
Because of this, a ceramic coating typically takes:
- 3 - 4 days for daily-driven vehicles
- 5+ days for high-end vehicles or those needing heavy correction
Why so long? Because a coating is only as good as its base. If the paint underneath isn’t properly prepared, even the best coating won’t perform the way it should. Let’s break down where that time goes and why it's necessary:
STEP 1 - Deep CLEANING & DECONTAMINATION (4-8+ HRS)

Before any polishing or coating begins, the vehicle must be completely stripped of contaminants. This involves a foam pre-wash and thorough contact wash, iron removal to eliminate embedded brake dust, tar removal (from road residue), and lastly a clay bar or clay towel decontamination to lift and remove any remnants or particles to make the paint as smooth as possible.
Why this matters:
Contamination left on the surface prevents the coating from bonding properly. Skipping or rushing this step can lead to premature coating failure, reduced durability, uneven appearance, and inconsistent performance. The cleaning/decontamination step alone often takes several hours, but it's essential for long-term results.
STEP 2 - PAINT INSPECTION & CORRECTION (6-20+ HRS)
After cleaning, the paint is inspected under specialized lighting to identify any pesky swirls, scratches, haziness, oxidation, or other imperfections on the exterior. These can all accumulate from improper washing or care, acid rain, abrasions from environmental factors, daily wear, etc. A machine polisher is then used to carefully and gently buff them away. Depending on the condition of the vehicle and overall goals, paint correction may include either just a light polish, a one-step enhancement, or even a multi-step correction.
Most of the time spent on a ceramic coating is not applying the coating, but in perfecting the paint. This step is where gloss, clarity, and depth are created, giving your vehicle a flawless foundation to complement any coatings to follow.
It's also important to remember that ceramic coatings do not hide imperfections. In fact, they often make them more visible. That’s why this step is so critical. The better the paint looks before the coating, the better the final result will be.
Simply put, the coating locks in and enhances the finish, but paint correction creates it.
STEP 3 - SURFACE PREP (1-2 HRS)
Once the correction is finished, the newly revived paint must then be prepped for coating. This includes a:
- Panel wipe
- Oil removal
- Final surface cleanse/wash
This step is essential in creating a completely bare, clean, and smooth surface so that the coating adheres properly to the paint and performs as intended. Skipping this step can cause any leftover oils/polishing products or residue to ultimately weaken the coating's bond.
STEP 4 - CERAMIC COATING APPLICATION (2-6+ HRS)
With the paint fully prepared, we can begin the coating process.
The coating is applied:
- Panel by panel, in controlled sections
- With careful monitoring of flash times
- Using specialized applicators and leveling techniques
Each coating has specific environmental requirements, including temperature and humidity considerations. The installer must carefully monitor how the coating behaves on the surface and adjust application techniques accordingly.
After application, the coating is leveled to ensure an even finish and to prevent high spots or streaking. This process must be done at the right moment - too early or too late can impact the final result.
Depending on the coating system, multiple layers may also be applied. Each layer requires proper leveling, appropriate time between each application, and careful inspection moving forward.
While this step may take less time than correction, it requires the most precision and attention to detail. One missed spot or improper leveling can severely affect the final finish. A professional application from our shop ensures:
- Even coverage
- Maximum durability
- Optimal gloss and hydrophobic performance
This is where craftsmanship truly matters - because precision during application directly impacts long-term performance and separates a rushed project from a high-quality, intentional transformation.
STEP 5 - CURING (8-24+ HRS)

After application, the coating needs time to cure and bond to the paint. This can be done through either natural curing or via IR heat lamps, both in a controlled indoor environment.
A major differentiator:
Infrared (IR) curing specifically helps both accelerate bonding and increase durability of the ceramic coating. Not every shop has this capability, but it plays a big role in long-term performance and sets our shop apart from others. In our opinion, it's the best method for proper curing.
Again, rushing this step compromises the entire process and requires the utmost patience. It's exciting to go ahead and see the final product, but we promise the finished result is well worth the wait.
STEP 6 - FINAL INSPECTION & DELIVERY PREP (1-2 HRS)
It's showtime! With the curing done, the finish undergoes some final touches before the vehicle is reunited with its owner, including a final wipe-down, last minute spot check under lighting, and quality control to ensure everything is absolutely perfect. For our team, only the best will do. Combined with masterful technique and a pure love for our craft, we strive to provide our clients with the level of service characteristic of luxury, high-end shops to produce an immaculate product.
WHY SOME SHOPS OFFER SAME-DAY COATINGS
You may see shops advertising "same-day ceramic coatings", but these typically involve:
- Minimal or no paint correction
- Quick wash and wipe-down
- Immediate coating application
- Little to no curing time
While this may provide short-term gloss, it often lacks durability and proper bonding.
The truth? This type of service is merely a temporary gloss upgrade, not a long-lasting protection system. It might be easier or cheaper, but your end result will look just that - cheap. What you're left with is wasted time, energy, and money, all for a subpar product. It's often important to remember that having anything worthwhile takes time and effort. Likewise, your vehicle deserves a coating that is done correctly. Proper investment into your car (and a little patience!) are key to a superior result that will stand the test of time and do what you want it to. You'll be much more satisfied with a job well-done than with a shop that considers your vehicle an afterthought. We promise!
