Detailing and Protecting a New Extra NG Aircraft

The Extra NG is a next-generation, two-seat aerobatic aircraft built by Extra Aircraft in Germany. Designed for pilots who want serious competition capability without giving up comfort or refinement, the NG blends unlimited aerobatic performance with a more advanced composite design, an ergonomic cockpit, and modern avionics. Extra positions it as the successor to its legendary aerobatic lineage, with a carbon monocoque fuselage, carbon fiber wing assembly, and an all-carbon rigid base frame that helped set it apart in the aerobatic world.

On paper, the Extra NG is every bit as wild as it looks. It is powered by a 315-horsepower Lycoming AEIO-580-B1A engine and is rated for +/-10 g in the aerobatic category. Official specs list a never-exceed speed of 220 knots, a maximum cruise speed of 202 knots, and a design focused on sharp maneuverability, precise handling, and strong visibility thanks to its bubble canopy.

What makes the aircraft especially interesting for a detailing story is that it is not just a purpose-built machine — it is also a visual statement. The NG’s deeper fuselage, sleek lines, carbon-rich construction, and high-end finish give it a dramatic presence both on the ground and in the air. Extra has also highlighted the model’s emphasis on pilot comfort, and competitive pilots have praised it for being unusually comfortable and refined for an aerobatic airplane, especially on transit flights.

Precision Surface Care for a Next-Generation Aerobatic Aircraft

At Superior Detailer, we are known for working on premium automobiles, but every now and then a project comes through the shop that reminds us our skill set goes far beyond four wheels. This time, the team had the opportunity to work on a brand-new Extra NG Aircraft, a next-generation aerobatic plane built for performance, precision, and visual impact.

With an aircraft like this, the mission was clear: refine the painted surfaces, add protection where it matters most, and preserve the finish with the same level of care we bring to every high-end vehicle that enters our studio. From surface prep to paint correction, protective film installation, and coating application, this was a true Team SD project from start to finish.

Why an Aircraft Like the Extra NG Deserves Professional Surface Protection

The Extra NG is not just another aircraft. It is a high-performance aerobatic machine with sleek lines, advanced materials, and a finish that deserves proper preservation. Just like a high-end sports car, its painted surfaces are exposed to environmental stress, contamination, handling marks, and impact-prone areas that can quickly take away from its appearance.

The difference is that an aircraft faces those elements in a very different environment. Leading edges are especially vulnerable, and the painted areas need to remain crisp, clean, and easy to maintain. That is why this project called for a carefully planned approach focused on both appearance and long-term protection.

Step One: Aircraft Preparation/Detail

Every great result starts with proper preparation. Before any correction or protection work began, we performed a full detail to ensure the aircraft’s surfaces were clean, residue-free, and ready for the next stages of the process.

This step is critical because even the smallest amount of dust, oils, or leftover contamination can interfere with polishing, film installation, and coating performance. On a project like this, the foundation matters just as much as the finish.

Step Two: Paint Protection Film on the Leading Edge of the Wings

We modified our SOP for this special job by installing the PPF on the wings first, before paint correction work on the rest of the airplane.

These forward-facing areas are constantly exposed to airflow, impact, bugs, debris, and environmental wear. Over time, that exposure can take a toll on the finish, especially on a machine built to perform at a high level. By protecting the leading edge of the wings with PPF, we added a sacrificial layer designed to help preserve the painted surface underneath.

This type of protection is all about being proactive. Instead of waiting for wear to show up, the goal is to defend the finish from day one.

Step Three: Level 1 Paint Correction to All Painted Areas

Even on a new aircraft, there is often room to improve the finish.

We performed a Level 1 Paint Correction to all painted areas to refine the surface, improve gloss, and increase overall clarity. New does not always mean flawless, and subtle imperfections from production, transport, handling, or prep can keep the paint from looking its absolute best.

Our goal with this step was not to overwork the finish, but to elevate it. By refining the painted areas, we were able to bring out a cleaner, sharper, more polished appearance that better matched the quality and presence of the aircraft itself.

Step Four: Modesta BC-08 for Long-Term Protection

Once the painted surfaces were properly refined, we applied Modesta BC-08.

BC-08 is an outstanding choice when the goal is to enhance gloss while adding durable, professional-grade protection. On a project like this, the coating helps create a cleaner, more visually striking finish while also supporting easier maintenance over time.

For owners who value long-term appearance, a quality coating is about more than just shine. It is about preserving the finish, reducing the stress of upkeep, and making it easier to keep premium surfaces looking the way they should.

Step Five: Cure Time, Final Wipe-Down, and Modesta M1 Shot

Patience is part of the process when you want the best result.

After the BC-08 application, we allowed the aircraft to sit undisturbed for two full weeks. Giving the coating that time to settle properly is an important part of achieving the outcome we expect from premium protection work.

Once that curing period was complete, we returned for a final wipe-down and applied Modesta M1 Shot spray sealant as the finishing touch. This last step helped further enhance the finish and completed the protection process the right way.

No rushing. No shortcuts. Just a deliberate process built around quality.

A True Team SD Project

What made this project even more meaningful was the teamwork behind it.

This was a true Team SD effort, with Gui and Karim both working on the aircraft together. Projects like this are a reminder that standout results come from more than just premium products. They come from experience, communication, patience, and a shared commitment to doing the work the right way.

When the project is unique, the details matter even more. That is where having the right team makes all the difference.

Premium Care for More Than Just Cars

This Extra Aircraft NG was a unique and exciting project for our studio. While most people know us for high-end automotive detailing, paint correction, ceramic coatings, and paint protection film, the mindset stays the same no matter what we are working on.

Refine the finish. Protect the vulnerable areas. Preserve the appearance. Deliver results worthy of the machine.

Whether it is a performance car, a collector vehicle, or an aerobatic aircraft, our approach remains rooted in craftsmanship, patience, and proven process.

The Result

The final result was an Extra Aircraft NG with enhanced gloss, refined painted surfaces, added leading-edge protection, and a premium layer of long-term defense built into the finish.

This was not just about making an aircraft look good for the moment. It was about helping preserve its appearance with a thoughtful process and the right materials from the beginning.

That is what we do at Superior Detailer.

At Superior Detailer, we believe premium surfaces deserve premium care. This Extra Aircraft NG was a special project and a perfect example of what happens when the right process, the right products, and the right team come together.
